Parents Can Prevent Teenage Addiction

Parents Can Prevent Teenage Addiction

The experimental and risky behaviour of teenagers often lead to their fall. They are just so thrilled with the thought of taking risks. No doubt, they try smoking, drugs and alcohol because of the so-called “thrill” they bring. Parents should do their part to help their teenagers avoid getting way off the right path.

Teenagers don’t fear the possible causes of alcohol, smoking and drug addiction. Their attention is on the enjoyment, euphoric feeling and other short term effects of these addictions. Because they are blinded by these, it is the role of the parents to straighten the way of their teenagers.

The Role Of Parents In Teenager AddictionsLet your teenager experience the effects of their action – no matter how bad it is. Don’t save them from the effects. Let them face the consequences by themselves. This will make them more responsible. Foster a smoking free environment in the home. Leading by example is the best way to teach your teenager to avoid smoking. How can you tell him to stop or avoid smoking when you or other members of the family smoke?

Parents should be the first ones to educate their teenagers about the dangers of smoking, drug addiction and alcoholism. Teenagers should be informed right away; otherwise, it will be too late.

Involve your teenager in other activities that will keep them busy and happy. Bored teenagers are usually the ones who get tempted with alcohol, cigarette and illegal drugs.

Don’t let your teenagers have alcohol drinks inside the house.

Don’t tolerate them. Once you tolerate a single alcohol session in the house, it will continue until such time that your teenager will already get addicted.

Help your teenager get back on spiritual track. If they are spiritually active, teenagers will be able to resist temptations. They are rooted in their belief and therefore, they will not be easily lured to take drugs or even taste alcohol or puff a single cigarette.

Staying out late should also be minimised. It is with the “going out” that teenagers learn to get vices like smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs.

Parents should be responsible in dealing with their teenagers. Without proper guidance from parents, teenagers will most likely go astray. Temptations to get addicted are just everywhere. If your teenager doesn’t have enough courage and guidance to say no, he will be in serious trouble later on.

Parents, indeed, play a vital role in preventing teenage addiction.
